James Elwick is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Science, Technology and Society (STS) at the Faculty of Science, York University. He is based at Norman Bethune College and can be reached via jelwick@yorku.ca or stschair@yorku.ca. His research focuses on the history of science education, academic misconduct, and the role of credentials in knowledge assessment. His work traces historical cheating strategies to understand contemporary academic integrity challenges and the societal trust in credentialing systems.
Elwick’s academic contributions include the book *Making a Grade: Victorian Examinations and the Rise of Standardized Testing* (2021), exploring the global spread of standardized testing, and co-editing *The Correspondence of John Tyndall* (2015–2018). He has taught courses such as 'History of Modern Science' and 'Science, Experts and Citizens,' earning the Faculty of Science Excellence in Teaching Award twice (2011, 2018).
His research integrates STS frameworks with historical analysis, examining topics like commensuration, metrics, and expertise. Current projects analyze cheating as a strategy to gain credentials, linking educational history to modern credentialing systems.
