James Edward Swain

James Edward Swain is a Clinical Associate Professor in Psychiatry at Stony Brook University. He serves as the inpatient medical director of child psychiatry and combines clinical practice with research. His clinical focus includes preventing/treating acute mental illness in children, particularly addressing parenting and early childhood interventions. Research emphasizes the neurobiological basis of parent-infant bonding and outcomes related to mental health challenges like depression, anxiety, and the chronic effects of stress/poverty. He explores both psychotherapeutic and pharmacological treatments.
