James E. Garvey is a Professor in Zoology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. His research focuses on the bioenergetic and life history adaptations of fish in response to environmental gradients, human-induced perturbations, and ecosystem characteristics. He investigates how these factors influence growth, behavior, recruitment, and biotic interactions in species like sturgeon and catfish across systems such as the Upper Mississippi River and Wabash River.
- Education: Ph.D. from Ohio State University
- Courses Taught: Conservation Biology (ZOOL 410), Fish Stock Assessment (ZOOL 468)
Research interests include:
- Fish Ecology
- Fish Management
- Food Web Dynamics
- Bioenergetics
- Aquatic Ecosystems
Recent publications examine fish movement, habitat selection, invasive species impacts, and energetic adaptations in riverine and reservoir systems. Studies span from 2003 to 2008, covering topics such as larval fish dispersal, sturgeon reproductive health, and winter survival strategies. Garvey's work emphasizes the interplay between abiotic factors (temperature, oxygen, flow) and biotic interactions (competition, predation) in shaping fish populations.
