Dr. James Dopp is an Associate Professor in the English Department at the University of Victoria since 1990. His research focuses on Canadian literature with a particular emphasis on sports narratives, especially hockey. He holds a PhD from York University and has published extensively across genres including poetry, fiction, and scholarly criticism. His major work Hockey on the Moon: Imagination and Canada's Game (2024) explores hockey's role in Canadian cultural identity. Dopp also engages in creative projects like songwriting, occasionally integrating music into his teaching.
Education: BA (Wilfrid Laurier University), MA (University of Victoria), PhD (York University).
Research interests include intersections of sports and literature, Canadian cultural studies, and narrative theory. Key publications include Now is the Winter: Thinking About Hockey (2009) and Writing the Body in Motion (2018, co-edited). He has contributed over 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters analyzing hockey's literary representations and cultural significance.
Recent work focuses on curling literature and re-evaluating national myths through sports narratives. Dopp serves on editorial boards for literary journals and frequently reviews contemporary Canadian literature. His creative works include poetry collections like Getting Lost, Going Home (2022) and songs reflecting Canadian themes.
