معرفی
James DiFrisco is a philosopher of science and theoretical biologist specializing in developmental and evolutionary biology. He currently serves as a Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute, leading a research group focused on conceptual theoretical biology. His academic journey includes a PhD in Philosophy from KU Leuven (2015), followed by postdoctoral fellowships at the Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research (Austria) and KU Leuven, and a visiting position at Yale University's Systems Biology Institute (2020). His work bridges philosophy and empirical biology, addressing themes such as biological individuality, levels of organization, and the dynamics of developmental systems.
Research interests include the theoretical foundations of evolutionary and developmental biology, with a focus on homology, trait individuation, and the integration of dynamical systems approaches. Collaborations with institutions like Yale University and the Wagner lab have advanced his studies on modular characters and evolutionary novelty.
Key publications from 2020–2025 explore interdisciplinary frameworks, such as 'Beyond Networks' (2025), which redefines dynamical systems modeling, and 'Biological agency' (2025), critiquing evolutionary research paradigms. His work emphasizes conceptual clarity in biological theories and their philosophical underpinnings.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Conceptual Theoretical Biology group at the Crick Institute, fostering cross-disciplinary research at the interface of philosophy and life sciences.
