James Dalby is a Teaching Professor at the University of Gloucestershire, associated with the College of Media, Art and Technology. With a background in film cinematography, he transitioned to become a leading practitioner and theorist in Immersive Media and Transmedia Storytelling, focusing on Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) applications in education and entertainment.
His research interrogates the limitations of traditional suspension of disbelief in immersive environments, proposing interaction-based immersion frameworks. He has authored a book on Transmedia Identity Formation (2024) and key papers on Holarchic Media (2021) and 1990s Television Class Dynamics (2017). Dalby's work has been presented at international conferences like the Transmedia Earth Conference (2017), where he co-developed theories about multi-modal narrative structures.
Awarded the University Teaching Fellow and WOW-award, Dalby is celebrated for his innovative teaching methodologies, including Google's Design Sprint Project framework. He advocates for adaptive higher education models to prepare students for the evolving digital media landscape.
