Dr James Cowley is an Internal Grant-Funded Researcher (B) at the University of Adelaide's School of Agriculture, Food and Wine, within the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology. His research focuses on valorizing underutilized crops like Plantago, Salvia, hemp, and sorghum, emphasizing their nutritional potential and integration into food products. He holds a PhD from the same university, supervised by Prof. Rachel Burton and Dr. Tina Bianco-Miotto, exploring seed composition variation in Plantago for food applications. His work includes an ARC Linkage Project on psyllium breeding technologies and analytical capabilities in food quality.
Key research interests include dietary fiber structure, functional food development, and crop utilization for marginalized lands. He advocates science education and communication, recognized by the 2017 Vice Chancellor's Student Volunteer of the Year Award. He is affiliated with the Plant Genomics Centre and eligible to supervise Masters/PhD students in food science and plant breeding.
