James Chase is an Associate Professor in the Philosophy and Gender Studies program at the University of Tasmania's School of Humanities. He currently serves as Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching Performance) within the College of Arts, Law and Education. Previously, he held roles such as Assistant Dean (Student Engagement and Retention) and Head of Discipline. Chase earned his PhD from the Australian National University and has taught at institutions including Victoria University of Wellington and Macquarie University.
His research focuses on epistemology, the history of analytic philosophy, and philosophical logic. Key interests include the relationship between knowledge and truth, antirealist positions, and the methodology of analytic philosophy. He has collaborated on projects examining analytic vs. continental philosophical methods and applications of epistemology to science communication. Chase has led or contributed to funded projects on pedagogical content knowledge, wellness frameworks in health care, and interventions to improve student engagement in online learning.
His teaching spans epistemology, philosophy of mind, and logic, with experience in on-campus, blended, and distance education. He has supervised doctoral students in epistemology, philosophy of science, and interdisciplinary ethics. Chase's work extends to institutional leadership, including curriculum design and learning initiatives, reflecting his commitment to fostering critical thinking and ethical engagement among students.
