Dr. James Cateridge is a Senior Lecturer in Film at the School of Arts, Oxford Brookes University. His work bridges academia and industry, focusing on media tourism, film policy, and creative industries mentoring. He leads the Creative Industries Research and Innovation Network (CIRIN) and manages student work placements through initiatives like the Oxford Brookes Documentary Club.
Education: PhD in Film and Television Studies from the University of East Anglia (2007), with prior professional experience in film sales (Sony Pictures Europe) and arts administration (Arts Council of England). He transitioned to academia post-2007, publishing under his former name James Caterer until 2012.
Research interests include spatial narratives in media tourism, policy impacts on film production, and cultural institution histories. Key projects include Mapping Mentoring in the UK Creative Industry Sector and studies on dark tourism’s digital dimensions. His work has been funded by the AHRC and Oxford Brookes’ Research Excellence Awards.
Publications span Creative Industries Journal, International Journal of Scottish Theatre and Screen, and Humanities. He frequently presents at conferences such as ECREA Film Studies Section (2013) and MeCCSA (2009). Awards include an Associate Fellowship at the Higher Education Academy.
Teaching spans undergraduate film industry studies, national cinemas, and MA-level industrial practices. He advises PhD candidates exploring WWII British cinema and dark media tourism.
