James Buhler is a Professor of Theory and Division Head of Theory & Composition at the University of Texas at Austin's College of Fine Arts. He directs the Center for American Music and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (1996). His research focuses on the history and theory of soundtracks, virtual instrument aesthetics, and critical theory. Buhler has authored influential books like Theories of the Soundtrack (2019) and co-edited volumes including Hearing the Movies (2015, 2nd ed.) and Sounds Like Action! (2021). Current projects include Toward a Vococentric Cinema (examining classical Hollywood soundtracks) and A Theory of Virtual Instruments (exploring virtual instrument ethics and aesthetics).
