James Buchanan

Dr. James Buchanan is a Senior Lecturer in Health Economics at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), based in the Wolfson Institute of Population Health (WIPH). He joined QMUL in 2023, leading work on health economics of precision diagnosis and treatment at WIPH and the Barts Biomedical Research Centre. Previously, he spent 18 years at the University of Oxford as a Researcher and Senior Researcher. His academic roles include teaching graduate and undergraduate students and supervising PhD students.

Key methodologies include cost-effectiveness analysis, discrete choice experiments, and microcosting studies.

Publications: His recent work addresses genomics cost analysis, health equity in precision medicine, and global implementation challenges of genomic technologies. Key themes include optimizing antibiotic use economics and evaluating genomic newborn screening.

Supervision: He has supervised Sally Hartmanis (University of Oxford) on genomic outcomes in economic evaluations.
