James Brian Byrd

James Brian Byrd is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan Medical School, where he serves as Principal Investigator of the Byrd Lab. His research focuses on improving the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension, which is the leading risk factor for death and disability worldwide.

Dr. Byrd completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Vanderbilt University, where he also earned a Master of Science degree in clinical investigation while working in Dr. Nancy Brown's laboratory. His academic journey has been focused on understanding the mechanisms of high blood pressure and developing better approaches for its management.

Dr. Byrd's research interests center on hypertension, particularly treatment-resistant high blood pressure. His laboratory investigates the role of the mineralocorticoid receptor in blood pressure regulation, with a specific focus on primary aldosteronism - a condition involving inappropriate activation of this receptor.
