James Bliss is Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Tulane University's School of Liberal Arts. He holds a PhD in Culture and Theory from UC Irvine and specializes in critical theory, Black feminism, and queer studies. His book In a Field of Static (2021) examines missed encounters between Black feminism and critical theory/cultural studies, analyzing debates like the theory wars, queer negativity vs. futurity, and intersectionality vs. assemblage theory.
Research explores antiblackness, relationality, and subjectivity reconstruction through Black feminist frameworks. Current projects address anarchism/failure and Black feminist critiques of violence. Publications appear in Signs, Feminist Studies, and Routledge anthologies, emphasizing discursive violence, spatial politics, and pedagogical challenges of Black feminist texts. Articles consistently engage with racialized/gendered power structures and epistemic resistance.
