James Bendle is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Organic Geochemistry at the University of Birmingham, affiliated with the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on organic geochemistry and paleoclimatology, particularly developing molecular tools to reconstruct past environmental conditions. Key themes include quantitative paleoclimate proxy development and Holocene/Cenozoic climate evolution. He has extended his work into speleology and archaeology, studying climate impacts on ancient civilizations in Crete and Southeast Asia.
Education includes a PGCHE from the University of Glasgow (2010), a PhD from Durham University (2003), and an MSc in Quaternary Science from Royal Holloway and University College London (1999). Teaching responsibilities include courses on paleoclimates, field skills, and research methods. He has held leadership roles, such as Director of the NERC CENTA Doctoral Training Partnership (2013–2019) and Senior Doctoral Tutor.
His research integrates biomarker proxies, sedimentary DNA, and isotopic analyses to address climate change and environmental dynamics. Collaborations span international institutions, and his fieldwork includes expeditions to Antarctica, Crete, and Vietnam. Recent highlights include advancements in 3-hydroxy fatty acid proxies and interdisciplinary work linking climate to archaeological records.
