Dr. James Barr von Oehsen is a Research Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and the director of the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC). He holds an additional appointment as a Research Professor in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh. Previously, he served as Associate Vice President for the Office of Advanced Research Computing at Rutgers University, where he led strategic initiatives in computing, networking, and data science.
His research focuses on cyberinfrastructure, advanced networking, edge computing, and federated platforms, supported by NSF and NIH grants. He is a founding member of the Ecosystem for Research Networking (ERN), a consortium fostering multi-campus collaborations in research and innovation. His work emphasizes secure computing platforms, cloud services, cybersecurity, and workforce development for next-generation technologies.
Dr. von Oehsen collaborates extensively with academic and industry partners to advance research computing capabilities and scale interdisciplinary research efforts. His leadership has significantly impacted research infrastructure at multiple institutions.
