James B. Gloer is the Roy J. Carver/Ralph L. Shriner Professor of Chemistry at the University of Iowa’s Department of Chemistry. His research focuses on the discovery, isolation, and structure determination of biologically active natural products from fungi, with applications in anticancer, antifungal, and agricultural sectors. He holds a PhD from the University of Illinois and a BS from the University of Florida.

His research program emphasizes fungal chemical ecology, targeting underexplored fungi for novel metabolites. Using bioassays (antifungal, antibacterial, antiinsectan, anticancer) and advanced chromatographic/NMR techniques, his team investigates interspecies competition metabolites and fungi that attack other organisms as sources of antifungal agents. Key areas include coprophilous fungi and their defensive mutualism roles.
