James A. Woods is the founder and Senior Counsel of Woods, a leading Canadian law firm specializing in dispute resolution. He holds the title of Advocatus Emeritus (Quebec, 2013) and has been recognized as one of Canada’s leading litigators. His roles include Sessional Lecturer in Trial Advocacy at McGill University’s Faculty of Law (1987–2019) and teaching Civil Procedure at the same Faculty (1984–1987). He has contributed to legal education through courses on Law for Architects and Engineers at McGill’s Faculty of Engineering (1993–2002).
Practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, arbitration (domestic and international), and appeals. Notable cases include BCE Inc. v. Debentureholders (2008), Metcalfe & Mansfield Alternative Investments II Corp. (Re) (2008), and Saputo v. CTVglobemedia Publishing Inc. (2010).
