James A. Smith is a Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Nevada, Reno. His interdisciplinary research focuses on early human intelligence, semantic cognition of paleolithic technology, and the philosophy of mental representations through neurobiological and mathematical frameworks. He integrates perspectives from biological anthropology with philosophical inquiry.
Smith teaches courses spanning ancient to contemporary philosophy, including Introduction to Metaphysics, Bioethics, Ancient/Medieval Philosophy, and Philosophy of Science. His mathematical background enables him to also teach algebra, calculus, and statistics courses.
His research examines cognitive processes through connectionism and dynamic systems theory, challenging traditional assumptions about mental representations in early Homo cognition. Additional research explores the anthropological concept of cosmopolitanism in prehistoric societies.
