James A. Kaser is a Professor and Archivist at the College of Staten Island (CSI), part of the City University of New York (CUNY). His academic interests focus on utopian communitarian movements, Staten Island history, and Swiss immigrant settlements in the U.S. He holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from Bowling Green State University, an M.A. in American Studies, an M.L.S. from Kent State University, and a B.A. magna cum laude from Kenyon College.
Professor Kaser’s research integrates historical analysis with cultural studies, emphasizing underrepresented narratives such as abolitionist communities, queer history through archival materials, and the intersection of fiction with urban identity. His publications include monographs on Staten Island’s Elliottville and the Battle of Chickamauga, as well as research guides on New Orleans, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. in fiction.
His recent work (2023–2025) explores personal documentation (e.g., scrapbooks) and queer history, reflecting a commitment to interdisciplinary approaches. His scholarship bridges local and national histories, offering insights into marginalized voices and material culture.
