James A. Banaski, Jr. is a Center Affiliate and Chief Executive Officer of Emergency Management Training & Consulting, LLC. He retired from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after 28 years of federal service, including roles with the Department of Defense and U.S. Army. A recognized global expert in Public Health Emergency Management, he has supported emergency response programs in over 50 countries across Central/South America, the Middle East, Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Africa. His career spans leadership in H1N1, hurricanes, the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Ebola, Zika, and the global response to COVID-19.
He holds dual BS degrees in Environmental Science and Biology from Drury University and an MS in Environmental Management from Webster University. He is certified as a Master Exercise Practitioner (DHS) and Certified Emergency Manager (IAEM). Currently, he serves as an Adjunct Instructor at Emory University and Georgetown University, focusing on public health preparedness education.
His professional experience includes 11 years in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps and technical assistance in building emergency management capacities worldwide. He has led responses to major disasters including the American Samoa Tsunami, Japan Earthquake/Tsunami, and the Joplin tornado.
Key areas of expertise include public health emergency operations centers (EOPCs), pandemic preparedness, and interdisciplinary disaster response strategies.
