Jakub Nowak is a Professor at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, Poland, where he serves as Head of the Department of Mediatization within the Faculty of Political Science and Journalism. He holds a habilitation (dr hab.) and is an active researcher in media and communication studies with a focus on digital media phenomena. His academic appointments include Visiting Professor at the University of Granada's Sociology Department for 2024-2025, where he co-created a course on 'Anti-Europeanization Backlash and Rising Nationalisms,' and previous teaching positions at universities in Barcelona, Madrid, Mainz, and Trnava.
Nowak's research focuses on the cultural, social, and political aspects of algorithmization and datafication, online popular culture, media-oriented social practices, and imaginaries related to media technologies. His work consistently examines how digital technologies reshape social interactions, privacy practices, and citizenship in networked environments. Drawing on Stuart Hall's articulation theory, he explores the structural conditions of online popular culture and the political dimensions of digital communication.
His publication record reveals a strong trajectory in understanding internet memes as cultural phenomena, privacy in digital environments, and online citizenship. Nowak's recent work increasingly focuses on the politics of privacy in datafied environments, examining how citizens navigate and redefine privacy through media practices. His research demonstrates how digital technologies create new forms of social organization while simultaneously reinforcing existing power structures.
Nowak has secured significant research funding, including the NCN OPUS grant 'Creating Privacy: Media Practices and Digital Citizenship' (2021-2024) and the Polish-German Foundation project 'Surveillance and Privacy in the Digital Age' (2017-2018). His editorial work includes serving as Secretary of the Editorial Board for 'Annales UMCS Sectio K: Politologia' (2008-2015) and as a member of the Editorial Committee for 'Mediatization Studies' (since 2017).
As an academic mentor, Nowak has supervised numerous students in media studies and political science. His professional affiliations include membership in the Polish Society for Social Communication and the European Communication Research Association, reflecting his commitment to advancing communication scholarship at both national and international levels.
Nowak leads research teams investigating digital citizenship and privacy practices, with particular attention to how ordinary users navigate increasingly datafied environments. His work bridges theoretical frameworks from cultural studies with empirical investigations of everyday digital practices, creating a distinctive approach to understanding media in contemporary society.
