Jakub Gajewski

Dr. Jakub Gajewski is a Lecturer at the Institute of Global Surgery within the School of Population Health at RCSI. He serves as Director of the Research Programme at the RCSI Institute of Global Surgery and holds an additional role as an Extraordinary Senior Lecturer at Stellenbosch University's Centre for Global Surgery. His expertise spans health sociology, implementation research, and surgical systems strengthening in sub-Saharan Africa. Key projects include leading the EU-funded SURG-Africa initiative and the Akazi breast and cervical cancer screening project in Malawi.

Dr. Gajewski holds a PhD and MSc from the University of Wrocław, Poland, and an MSc in Leadership and Innovation in Healthcare from RCSI. His research focuses on surgical capacity assessment, pediatric surgery, healthcare financing, and patient-centered care. He has contributed to large-scale studies such as the COST-Africa project (2011–2016), evaluating non-physician clinician training in Malawi and Zambia.

His current work emphasizes sustainable surgical systems in resource-limited settings, leveraging participatory action research and systems science approaches. He collaborates widely on grants including the Horizon 2020-funded SURG-Africa and the SURGWater project addressing climate-resilient healthcare infrastructure in Malawi.
