Jakob Willesen

Jakob Willesen is an Associate Professor at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. He holds dual appointments in the Section for Surgery, Neurology and Cardiology, and the Section for Diagnostic Imaging & Companion Animal Surgery and Clinical Specialties. His work is primarily conducted at the University Hospital for Companion Animals.

Dr. Willesen earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 1999 and was awarded his PhD in 2008 for his research on French Heartworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) in dogs.

His primary research focus lies in Internal Medicine for Companion Animals, with particular expertise in Clinical Cardiology, Respiratory Disease, and Cardiopulmonary Parasites. His work bridges clinical practice with research, focusing on improving diagnostic methods and treatment protocols for companion animals. He has developed specialized knowledge in echocardiography techniques and applications across various species, including dogs and exotic animals like flamingos.

Recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on veterinary cardiology, particularly echocardiography techniques and applications across various species. His research also extends to parasitology, with significant contributions to understanding Angiostrongylus vasorum (French Heartworm) in dogs, as well as metabolic disorders and breed-specific cardiac conditions in companion animals. His work spans clinical studies, diagnostic methodology development, and investigations into emerging zoonotic diseases.

Dr. Willesen serves as the editor of www.kardiologi.ku.dk, a key resource for veterinary cardiology information in Denmark.
