Prof. Jakob Pernthaler is the Head of the Limnological Station at the University of Zurich's Department of Plant and Microbial Biology. His research focuses on microbial ecology in aquatic systems, particularly bacterial community dynamics, cyanobacteria, and protist interactions. He leads a research group and oversees the Limnological Station, which offers advanced analytical facilities for studying planktonic microorganisms.
Teaching responsibilities include courses such as BIO 141 (Microbial Ecology), BIO 290 (Aquatic Microbial Ecology), and BIO 308 (Introduction to Limnology), emphasizing fieldwork and laboratory techniques. The Station also hosts internships and block courses for advanced students.
His work integrates molecular, biochemical, and ecological approaches to understand microbial processes in lakes and other water bodies. Research highlights include studies on Planktothrix cyanobacteria, bacterial predation strategies, and the impact of environmental variables on microbial diversity.
