Jakob Elster is a Professor at the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights at the University of Oslo. His research focuses on ethics, political philosophy, and human rights, with particular interests in autonomy, consequentialist theories, and the role of moral experts. He holds a PhD in philosophy from the University of Oslo (2007) and has held roles including postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Philosophy (IFIKK) and senior advisor at the Regional Committees for Medical and Health Research Ethics (REK).
His academic interests include the ethical limits of government influence on moral motivation, the relationship between consequentialism and rights, and bioethics. He teaches courses on human rights methodology, political theory, and research ethics. Notably, he co-led the 'GOODPOL' project at the Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) exploring political morality and policy feasibility.
Awards include the 2011 Journal of Applied Philosophy best article prize for 'How Outlandish Can Imaginary Cases Be?'. He contributes to research groups such as Oslo Political Theory (OPT) and Global Challenges to Human Rights, addressing topics like democratic governance and ethical expertise.
