Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jakob Burger holds the Chair of Chemical Process Engineering at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) Campus Straubing since 2017. His research focuses on conceptual design of processes in chemistry and biotechnology, particularly synthetic fuels, C1 chemistry, and computer-aided methods like Pareto optimization. He leads the Green Fuel Center and contributes to sustainable chemical processes. Burger earned his diploma in Process Engineering from the University of Stuttgart (2009) and his PhD from the University of Kaiserslautern (2012). He has held roles including postdoctoral fellow at Imperial College London (2013) and assistant professor at the University of Kaiserslautern (2016–2017). His work integrates experimental and computational approaches, including NMR spectroscopy and machine learning for process design.
Key research areas include phase equilibrium modeling, process synthesis using reinforcement learning, and sustainable fuel production. His group collaborates on projects like the OME Demonstration Plant and E2Fuels, advancing renewable energy solutions. Publications emphasize novel separation techniques, azeotropic mixture processing, and biocatalytic systems. Burger’s team also explores techno-economic analysis for scalable production of oxygenated fuels and carbon capture technologies.
Labs/Teams: Green Fuel Center, OME Demonstration Plant, and collaborations with the SynBioFoundry@TUM. His research bridges process engineering with sustainability, addressing raw material transitions and circular economy challenges.
