Jaime Grunlan is a Professor and Leland T. Jordan '29 Chair Professor in the J. Mike Walker '66 Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University's College of Engineering. He holds joint appointments in Materials Science & Engineering and Chemistry. His research develops multifunctional polymer nanocomposites with applications in energy efficiency, safety systems, and advanced electronics.
Research Focus Areas:
- Environmentally-benign flame retardant nanocoatings for textiles and foams
- Ultra-high gas barrier thin films for packaging and electronics
- Dielectric nanocoatings for high-voltage insulation
- Thermally conductive nanocomposites
- Polyelectrolyte complex materials
His group pioneers water-based layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly techniques to create nanobrick wall structures that provide exceptional flame resistance and gas barrier properties. Current projects include developing fire-resistant wood composites, stretchable gas barriers for flexible electronics, and dielectric nanocoatings with record-breaking breakdown strength. He directs the Polymer NanoComposites Laboratory, which partners with industry to implement sustainable materials solutions.
Honors:
- Fellow of American Chemical Society (2023)
- TEES Research Impact Award (2023)
- Fellow of International Association of Advanced Materials (2021)
- ASME Fellow (2018)
- National Academy of Inventors Senior Member (2019)
