Jahan Ramazani is a University Professor and Edgar F. Shannon Professor of English at the University of Virginia, where he has taught since 1988. He is Director of Modern and Global Studies, specializing in 20th-century American, British, and postcolonial poetry. His research focuses on transnational poetics, elegiac traditions, and the intersection of poetry with global cultural dynamics. Ramazani holds a PhD from Yale (1988), an M.Phil. from Yale (1986) and Oxford (1983), and a B.A. from the University of Virginia (1981).

Research interests span postcolonial poetry, modernist transnationalism, elegy studies, and the interplay between poetry and cultural translation. His landmark books include Poetry in a Global Age (2020), A Transnational Poetics (2009), and Poetry of Mourning (1994). He has edited major anthologies like The Norton Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Poetry and contributed to the Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics.
Awards and honors include membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2016), a Guggenheim Fellowship (2000–2001), and the Harry Levin Prize (2011). His invited lectures span global venues from Stanford to Oxford, addressing themes like 'Poetry and (Un)Translatability' and 'Yeats’s Asias.' He has also been a key figure in reshaping literary canons through transnational and global perspectives.
