Jagdish Singh serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at North Dakota State University's (NDSU) College of Pharmacy. A dual Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and Association of Biotechnology and Pharmacy, he has transformed the department into a nationally ranked research powerhouse through strategic leadership and NIH-funded initiatives including COBRE and INBRE programs.
His academic credentials include a PhD in Pharmaceutics (1982), MS (1979), and BS (1977) from BHU Institute of Technology, Varanasi, complemented by postdoctoral training at University of California, San Francisco (1992-1994) and University of Otago (1985-1988). This foundation supports his pioneering work in advanced drug delivery systems.
Dr. Singh's research centers on mechanistic development of novel delivery technologies for biotechnologically derived molecules targeting diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. His laboratory specializes in transdermal delivery systems, protein stabilization techniques, and nano-carriers including microspheres, nanoparticles, nanomicelles, and liposomes. Notable innovations include thermosensitive polymers for basal insulin delivery and graft polymers for gene therapy applications, reflecting deep expertise in biopharmaceutics and polymer science.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals dominant trends in polymeric delivery systems for protein/peptide therapeutics, with 70% focused on diabetes applications (particularly insulin delivery) and 30% on gene therapy for autoimmune conditions. The work consistently bridges fundamental polymer chemistry with in vivo validation, emphasizing stability, controlled release kinetics, and biocompatibility across thermosensitive copolymers, PLGA matrices, and chitosan derivatives.
His exceptional contributions are recognized through prestigious honors including:
- AAPS and Association of Biotechnology and Pharmacy Fellowships
- Waldron Research Award (2001-02)
- Multiple Teacher/Researcher of the Year Awards from NDSU College of Pharmacy (1997-2002)
- Consecutive MortarBoard Preferred Professor designations
As an educator, Singh has mentored over 30 graduate students and postdocs while serving on 25 advisory committees across disciplines. His $10M+ research portfolio—funded by DoD, NIH, PhRMA Foundation, and AFPE—supports development of the combined Pharm.D./Ph.D. program and Center for Biopharmaceutical Research and Production. Under his decade-long chairmanship, the department achieved #9 national ranking for NIH-funded faculty and #1 for student support in NRC evaluations.
The Singh Lab operates within NDSU's Center for Biopharmaceutical Research and Production, leveraging interdisciplinary collaborations with Chemistry and Polymers departments to advance translational delivery systems. Current initiatives focus on clinical translation of nano-carriers for diabetes therapeutics and neurodegenerative disease applications.
