Jae-Sung Chon is a Lecturer II and Chair of the Environmental Design Program at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Architecture. He also serves as Director of the Architecture Gallery (A2G) and the STUFF research group. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. from University College London, a Professional M.Arch. from the University of Manitoba, a Graduate Diploma in Housing from McGill University, and a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from Yonsei University.
Chon's research focuses on post-humanist urban theory, hybrid morphologies, and cyborg urbanism. He integrates practice and pedagogy through initiatives like the Open City Design Institute (OCDI) and Office for Urban Interiors (OUI). His creative work includes urban housing projects, international design competitions (e.g., BEE HOUSE LAB, THE BENCH), and curated exhibitions like 'Migrating Landscapes' at the Venice Biennale (2012) and 'Ecology and Design' at ATMOSPHERE 2013.
His awards include the 2014 Grand Jury Prize for Commerce Design Winnipeg. Chon's teaching emphasizes experimental design studios and the integration of urban theory with practical applications. He leads the A2G gallery and MAKE event space, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue between academia and public audiences.
