Jae-Hyun Ryou is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Houston, with affiliations to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering Program, Texas Center for Superconductivity (TcSUH), and Advanced Manufacturing Institute (AMI). His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and M.S. and B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea.

Research Interests center on semiconductor materials and devices for photonic, electronic, energy, and sensing applications. His group specializes in heteroepitaxy of semiconductor thin films, flexible electronics and photonics, energy harvesting devices, personal healthcare sensors, and extreme-environment electronics, combining modeling, growth, characterization, and fabrication.
Scientific Awards include the 2024 University of Houston Award for Excellence in Research, multiple 50-in-5 Scholars recognitions (2018–2022), Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowships (2022–2023), and teaching/research excellence awards from the University of Houston (2017–2022).
Publications and Patents highlight advancements in flexible III-N and III-V devices, high-temperature piezoelectric sensors, and strain-engineered semiconductors. His students have won Best Dissertation Awards and student symposium prizes for their work on flexible solar cells, single-crystal III-N films, and self-powered sensors.
