Dr. Jadranka Nappi is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Center of Marine Science and Innovation (CMSI) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where she conducts research under Professor Torsten Thomas' supervision. Her work bridges laboratory science and field research in marine environments.
Dr. Nappi earned her Bachelor of Environmental Science and Ecology from the University of Rome, TorVergata (2010) and Master in Marine Biology from the University of Pisa, Italy (2013). She completed her PhD in Biotechnology at UNSW's School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Science in 2019 under Associate Professor Suhelen Egan.
Her research focuses on marine microbial ecology, particularly bacterial-seaweed interactions and antibiotic-producing bacteria. She employs advanced techniques including bioinformatics, amplicon sequencing, fluorescence microscopy, and molecular approaches to analyze marine microbial communities. Her work on engineering Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 demonstrates her interdisciplinary approach combining microbiology with biotechnology.
Dr. Nappi has published 14 journal articles, 1 book chapter, and 1 preprint, establishing herself as a productive researcher in marine microbiology despite being early in her career.

As part of her role at CMSI, Dr. Nappi supervises PhD students, providing guidance on experimental design, fieldwork, and laboratory methodologies. Her research benefits from UNSW's substantial investment in research infrastructure.
Based at Level 5 of the Biological Science Building (D26), Dr. Nappi integrates fieldwork with laboratory analysis. Her practical qualifications as a PADI Scuba Diving Instructor, Emergency First Responder, and Coastal Skipper enable hands-on marine research. She collaborates across disciplines to advance understanding of marine microbial systems with potential applications in environmental management and sustainable aquaculture.
