Jade Whitlam is a Departmental Lecturer in Archaeology at the School of Archaeology, University of Oxford, and serves as Course Director for the Diploma and Advanced Diploma in British Archaeology. She directs studies for short online courses, weekly classes, and day/weekend events in Archaeology, Anthropology, and Ancient History. Her academic background includes a BA (Hons) in Biological Sciences from Oxford, an MSc in Environmental Archaeology and Palaeoenvironments from Birmingham, and a PhD in Archaeology from Reading.

Jade’s research examines the interaction between people and environments, focusing on the emergence of farming in Southwest Asia and associated plant management strategies. Her work tracks the long-term socio-economic consequences of agriculture, with fieldwork experience in Iraq, Jordan, Israel, Türkiye, Siberia, and Italy. She is also a publicly engaged researcher, developing activities to communicate her findings to broader audiences.
Her recent publications address topics such as early cereal processing in Jordan, weed flora analysis in France, and Neolithic plant economies in Iran. Awards include a PGCert in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and Fellowship in the Higher Education Academy, supported by grants from the Gerald Averay Wainwright Fund and British Academy. Her public engagement projects include collaborations with the Pitt Rivers Museum and the Museum of English Rural Life.
