Jade Mitchell serves as Professor and Associate Department Chair in the Department of Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering at Michigan State University, holding joint appointments in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and College of Engineering.
Her educational background includes a
- PhD in Environmental Engineering (Drexel University, 2010)
- MS in Civil Engineering (Drexel University, 2007)
- BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering (University of Pittsburgh)
Mitchell's research focuses on quantitative risk modeling for water safety, food security, and bioterrorism threats. Her lab develops frameworks for prioritizing drinking water contaminants, analyzes disinfection byproduct-pathogen tradeoffs in distribution systems, and conducts equivalence testing for pathogen surrogates on fomites and low-moisture foods. Current projects include EPA-funded national studies on drinking water risk tradeoffs and QMRA training initiatives.
Her laboratory leads the Consortium for Drinking Water Risk Trade-Offs with 8 institutional partners, managing multi-state field sampling programs and stakeholder workshops for water utilities. The Risk Modeling Lab maintains active collaborations with agencies including the Great Lakes Water Authority and Northern Arizona University.
