Jacques Lamarche is a Professor in the Department of French Studies at Western University, where he serves as Full-Time Faculty. He previously held the position of Chair of the Department of French Studies from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2019. His office is located in University College, room 3123, and he can be reached at lamarche@uwo.ca or by phone at 519-661-2111 ext 85724.
Dr. Lamarche specializes in linguistic theory, with particular expertise in:
- Semantics
- Morphosyntax
- French linguistics
- English linguistics
His current research focuses on the semantics of label application. As of January 2020, he was developing an argument that the semantics of natural languages should be rooted directly in the real world rather than in individual mental representations. He contends that lexical meaning must be extensional because associations between linguistic forms and meanings require consensus among speakers in a community, which is only possible if both form and meaning exist as public and external realities that can be examined and debated collectively.
Dr. Lamarche's academic background includes comprehensive training at the University of Quebec in Montreal:
- Ph.D. in Linguistics (1990-1998)
- M.A. in Linguistics (1988-1990)
- B.A. in Linguistics (1985-1988)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Toronto (1999)
