Prof Jacqueline Stacey is a Professor of Cultural Studies, English and American Studies at the University of Manchester’s Department of English, American Studies and Creative Writing. She holds a BA in European Studies (University of Sussex, 1982), MA in Women’s Studies (University of Kent, 1985), and PhD from the University of Birmingham (1992). Her interdisciplinary research spans cultural studies, film analysis, gender, sexuality, and embodiment, focusing on topics like Hollywood cinema, queer film, medical visualization, and genetic constructions of identity.
Her teaching includes undergraduate modules like 'Crossing Over with Tilda Swinton' and 'Gender, Sexuality and the Body,' as well as directing the Gender, Sexuality and Culture MA program. She has supervised over 20 PhD students and leads the annual Manchester Sexuality Summer School. Her research explores intersections between visibility, power structures, and cultural intelligibility, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to gender equality and cultural sustainability.
Recent work includes examining impersonal subjects in family histories, queer cinematic representations, and global cultural formations. Her projects often bridge academic disciplines, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship. She has co-edited influential volumes on cultural criticism and feminist theory, further shaping discourse in her fields.
