Dr. Jacqueline Smith is an Associate Professor, Teaching Stream in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto (UofT), part of the Faculty of Arts & Science. As of 2025, she is on leave until Winter 2026, with limited email availability. She joined UofT in 2015 after teaching at the University of Alberta, where she completed her MSc in Computing Science (2011).
Her research focuses on computer science education, emphasizing inclusive teaching practices and student support, particularly for introductory courses. She has pioneered active learning strategies at scale, mastery-based course designs, and mentorship programs for teaching assistants and instructors. Prior to UofT, she contributed to courses in algorithmic graph theory and computer organization at the University of Alberta.
Awards include the 2021 University of Toronto Early Career Teaching Award. She is a core member of the Computer Science Education Research group and actively shares her pedagogical innovations at international conferences.
Notable contributions include founding Second-Year Learning Communities to support new CS students and redesigning admission processes for equity. During the 2020 shift to remote learning, she provided critical guidance to instructors to maintain student well-being.
