Jacqueline Jung is a Professor in the History of Art at Yale University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). Her research focuses on medieval European art and architecture, particularly Gothic sculpture and cathedrals in France and Germany. She explores themes such as the body in medieval art, materiality, and the interplay between liturgical spaces and communal identity.
Her notable publications include Eloquent Bodies: Movement, Expression, and the Human Figure in Gothic Sculpture (2020) and The Gothic Screen: Sculpture, Space, and Community in French and German Cathedrals (2013), which earned multiple prestigious awards. She has pioneered courses on sacred art and interdisciplinary studies of art and race in medieval Europe.
Jung’s scholarship integrates German art historical methodologies, emphasizing the historiography of medieval art and the role of reproduction (e.g., photography) in shaping modern perceptions. She advises graduate students on diverse topics, including medieval reliquaries, liturgical objects, and cross-cultural art connections.
Her awards include the Samuel and Ronnie Heyman Prize, PROSE Award, and John Nicholas Brown Award. She translates seminal German art historical texts, such as Aloïs Riegl’s Historical Grammar of the Visual Arts, and advocates for innovative, boundary-pushing research in medieval studies.
