Jacqueline Degen is a Research Professor at the Department of Zoology, University of Würzburg. She leads the Degen lab within the Biocenter, focusing on the flight behavior of nocturnal insects under natural and artificial light conditions.
Her research examines how celestial cues like the moon influence insect orientation and how light pollution disrupts ecological processes. Key projects involve real-time 3D tracking of moths (Deilephila elpenor, Sphinx ligustri) and developing insect-friendly lighting solutions.
The most recent articles highlight interdisciplinary approaches combining engineering and biology to study light pollution's impact. Themes include insect navigation, urban lighting effects, tracking technology, and environmental adaptation.
She mentors doctoral students Mona Storms and Makrina Tsinoglou, as well as Master's student Isabella Engel. Her work includes collaborations with Tobias Degen and Andreas Jechow, utilizing field and laboratory experiments to address ecological challenges.
