Professor Jacqueline Anne Johnson is a distinguished academic at the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI), part of the Tickle College of Engineering. She holds the rank of Professor in Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering, with tenure since 2013. Her academic journey includes a B.Sc. (1st class) and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Liverpool (1985), followed by postgraduate certifications in education. She has held roles at Liverpool John Moores University, Argonne National Laboratory, and UTSI, where she transitioned from Adjunct Professor to Full Professor by 2018.
Her research focuses on advanced materials science, particularly in amorphous materials, glass ceramics, and biomedical applications of nanoparticles. Notable contributions include developing storage phosphors for medical imaging and magnetic nanoparticles for hyperthermia therapy. Her work bridges materials synthesis, characterization (via Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray techniques), and biomedical engineering.
Awarded the R&D 100 Award (2007), Fellowships from the Institute of Physics and American Ceramic Society, and the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award (2017), her research has produced over 50 patents and publications. Key themes in her recent work include oxygen insertion mechanisms in FeSb₂O₄ phases, luminescence in doped glasses, and iron nanoparticle synthesis for MRI contrast agents.
Her professional experience spans academic leadership, material science research, and collaborative projects at national labs like Argonne. She actively engages in translational research, aiming to advance medical technologies through innovative materials.
