Dr. Jacqueline Ann Fay is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Texas at Arlington, specializing in early medieval English literature and culture. She holds a PhD from the University of Notre Dame and has been at UTA since 2003, earning tenure in 2010. She currently serves as Associate Chair of the Department of English and Chair of the Faculty Senate. Her research focuses on the intersection of human and non-human elements in medieval texts, particularly through analyses of plant and animal ecologies in Anglo-Saxon England. She has authored numerous articles and books, including Materializing Englishness in Early Medieval Texts (2022). Dr. Fay has received multiple awards, including the Academy of Distinguished Service Leaders (2024) and grants from the NEH and UTA. She has advised over 20 graduate students and contributed extensively to academic service roles at the departmental, college, and university levels, including leadership in faculty governance and diversity initiatives.
Education: PhD in English (2003, University of Notre Dame), MPhil in Old English Literature (1995, University of Manchester), BA in English (1994, University of Manchester).
Research Interests: Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, medieval medical texts, cultural geography, and interdisciplinary approaches to early medieval studies. Recent work explores non-human agency in medieval literature and environmental humanities.
Publications include over 15 peer-reviewed articles and chapters, with a focus on interdisciplinary methods and historical materialism. Her articles often analyze textual representations of gender, age, and ecology in early medieval texts.
Awards and Grants: Includes NEH funding for humanities projects, UTA research grants, and recognition for service leadership. She has held visiting and adjunct roles and served on numerous academic committees, including faculty senate and diversity initiatives.
Teaching: Specializes in Old English, medieval British literature, and theoretical approaches to literature. Has taught courses on Chaucer, medieval environmental literature, and the history of the English language.
