Jacob Tropp

Jacob Tropp is a Professor in the Department of History at Middlebury College, where he has taught since 1999. He holds a B.A. from Haverford College and a Ph.D. in African history (with a secondary field in Native American history) from the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on transnational dimensions of African and Native American histories, particularly environmental and health-related themes in colonial and postcolonial contexts. He has been supported by fellowships from institutions such as the American Philosophical Society and the Rachel Carson Center.

Dr. Tropp teaches a wide array of courses on African history, including introductory surveys and specialized seminars on topics like gender, environmental interactions, and liberation struggles. His work bridges global and local histories, emphasizing transnational connections and their impacts on social dynamics.

His recent research explores the intersections of health, development, and environmental justice, with publications in Journal of World History, Comparative Studies in Society and History, and Journal of Global History. He has also presented at international conferences, including discussions on transnational nuclear activism and environmental justice.
