Jacob Khurgin is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins University’s Whiting School of Engineering. He is renowned for pioneering work at the intersection of optics, electronics, and condensed matter physics, with notable contributions to metamaterials, nonlinear optics, and quantum cascade lasers. His research spans semiconductor nanostructures, plasmonics, and optical refrigeration, leading to over 40 patents and innovations in laser communication systems.
Khurgin holds a BS and MS from the Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics in St. Petersburg, Russia, and a PhD in Electro-Physics from New York University (1987). Before joining Johns Hopkins in 1988, he worked at Philips Laboratories (1980–1988). He has held visiting professorships at Princeton, UCLA, Brown, ETH Zurich, and Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris.
His research interests emphasize mid-infrared optical frequency combs, phonon engineering for high-frequency transistors, and novel optical modulators. He has been funded by DARPA, AFOSR, NASA, and the NSF, among others. Khurgin is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and Optical Society of America, and serves as associate editor for Optica. His publications include 340+ peer-reviewed papers, 8 book chapters, and the seminal book Slow Light – Science and Applications.
His recent work focuses on epsilon-near-zero materials, all-optical graphene switches, and biomedical applications of laser vibrometry for non-contact cardiac monitoring. He actively collaborates with industry leaders like IBM, HP, and Philips, translating theoretical insights into practical technologies like optical refrigeration and plasmonic devices.
