Professor Jacky Bowring is a distinguished academic at Lincoln University's School of Landscape Architecture, where she has served as Head (2012-2014) and Co-Head (2017) of the School. A Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects and Companion of the Royal Society Te Apārangi, she is internationally recognized for her innovative work connecting memory, emotion, and landscape.
Her educational background includes a PhD and Diploma in Landscape Architecture (Distinction) from Lincoln University, and a BSc(Hons) from the University of Canterbury. She is a registered landscape architect with the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects.
Bowring's research centers on the complex relationships between place, memory, and emotion, with particular focus on memorials, heritage landscapes, and critical design practices. Her influential book Landscape Architecture Criticism (2020) pioneered critical discourse in the field, while Melancholy and the Landscape (2016) explores emotional dimensions of place. She has advised on major public memorials including the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial, Pukeahu National Memorial Park, and Pike River Mining Disaster memorials.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on memorial design, landscape criticism, and the emotional dimensions of place, with increasing attention to climate change adaptation, mental health through landscape design, and feminist approaches to public space. Her work bridges theoretical scholarship with practical design applications.
