Dr Finn Bowring is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from Lancaster University and has held academic positions at Manchester University before joining Cardiff in 2000. His research focuses on Marxism, critical theory, existential phenomenology, and the critique of work, with a strong emphasis on the work of Hannah Arendt. He also explores political ecology and biotechnology's societal impacts. Dr Bowring teaches Social Theory and convenes advanced modules in critical social theory.

Research Interests
Dr Bowring’s interdisciplinary work bridges classical sociology and modern critical theory. He interrogates the ethical dimensions of social organizations and practices, particularly through the lens of existential philosophy and political ecology. His recent focus on mortality in the Anthropocene (2025) exemplifies his integration of environmental studies with existential analysis. He critically examines biotechnology’s societal implications, as seen in works like Science, Seeds and Cyborgs (2003).
Teaching & Administration
Dr Bowring leads core modules on Social Theory and supervises PhD students in critical theory and political philosophy. His administrative roles include serving as the School’s Assessment and Feedback Lead and representing staff as a UCU (University and College Union) representative. He actively contributes to the charitable organization Giving What We Can.
