Associate Professor Jackie Tan-Showyin is an Associate Professor and Director of the Eye Research Group at the School of Optometry & Vision Science, UNSW Sydney. She leads a team conducting industry-sponsored clinical trials and investigator-initiated research, collaborating with over 20 multinational partners. Her work focuses on dry eye disease, contact lens design, and meibomian gland dysfunction. She holds a PhD in Optometry (2006), BOptom (Hons) (1994), and a Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics (2015). She supervises postgraduate students and is a Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association.
Research Interests: Dry eye mechanisms in contact lens wearers, contact lens performance, and clinical trial methodologies. Her research has contributed to approved dry eye therapies and lens designs.
Awards: Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association.
Grants: Over $15M in grants for trials in dry eye therapies, contact lenses, and ocular pharmacology. Highlights include studies on UNR844 for presbyopia, EXN407 for diabetic macular edema, and AZR-MD-001 for MGD.
Teaching & Supervision: Supervises projects on meibomian gland morphology, Manuka honey eyelid treatments, and automatic dry eye diagnosis. Teaches OPTM8514 Research Project.
Labs/Teams: Eye Research Group at UNSW, conducting industry-driven clinical trials. Active in editorial roles for Eye and Contact Lens.
