Jack Halberstam is the David Feinson Professor of The Humanities at Columbia University, specializing in queer theory, gender studies, and cultural critique. Their research explores intersections of gender, sexuality, and popular culture, with notable works such as Female Masculinity and The Queer Art of Failure. Halberstam’s recent projects include Wild Things: The Disorder of Desire (2020) and an upcoming book Unworlding: An Aesthetics of Collapse.
In 2018, Halberstam received the Arcus/Places Prize for innovative scholarship on gender, sexuality, and the built environment. Their work extends beyond academia, including a short film So We Moved (2022), featured at MoMA NYC, which critically engages with themes of displacement and queer temporality.
Halberstam’s interdisciplinary approach bridges humanities, social sciences, and activism, addressing topics from Gothic literature to trans studies. Their contributions have significantly impacted queer and feminist discourses in academia and public intellectual spaces.
