Dr. Jack Bateman is the Linnean Professor of Biology at Bowdoin College. He earned his BS from Dalhousie University, PhD from Harvard Medical School in Cellular and Developmental Biology, and completed postdoctoral training at Harvard's Department of Genetics.
His laboratory investigates chromosome organization within the nucleus, focusing on how interchromosomal interactions regulate gene expression using Drosophila models. Research combines live imaging with polymer physics modeling to understand somatic homolog pairing dynamics.
Recent publications examine radiation responses in Sciara coprophila, transvection mechanisms, and enhancer-promoter distance effects. The lab contributes methodological innovations for Drosophila genetic manipulation and imaging.
Teaching includes Genetics and Molecular Biology (BIOL 2112), emphasizing experimental approaches to genetic analysis.
