Jabari Jones serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Oceanographic Science at Bowdoin College, with dual affiliation at the Roux Center for the Environment. His office is located in Roux Center Room 226 (contact: j.jones@bowdoin.edu, 207-208-2303).
Dr. Jones's research examines humans as geological agents through three interconnected lenses:
- River dynamics across temporal scales (flood events to centuries)
- Environmental justice in distribution of ecological benefits/harms
- Institutional approaches to diversity, equity and inclusion
Recent publications reveal interdisciplinary integration of physical geoscience and social justice, with key themes including human-induced channel change, equitable water governance, and field-based pedagogy. His work bridges fluvial geomorphology, community science, and critical analysis of power structures in environmental management.
Dr. Jones actively cultivates community-university partnerships through community science initiatives that empower non-academic stakeholders to lead scientific inquiry. His teaching philosophy emphasizes relationship-building and centers student activism in geoscience education reform.
