J.P.H. (Jaana) Serres, PhD is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Research Centre for Media and Journalism Studies (CMJS). Her primary affiliation is with the Faculty of Arts’ department of Media, Cultural Industries & Society. She holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from Oxford University (2018–2021), where she focused on the 'Africa to the world' movement in Nigeria’s music industry. Prior to academia, she practiced law in New York, Paris, and London.
Research Interests: Jaana’s work explores global flows of popular culture in Africa and the Middle East, focusing on citizenship, transnational cultural entrepreneurship, and future-making practices. She examines digital economies, youth survival strategies, and cultural policy in contexts like Lagos and Dubai. Her research has been funded by organizations including the Wenner-Gren Foundation and the Dutch National Sector Plan.
